Public resource for 2026 candidates
A calm, plain-language guide to the usual path from choosing a jurisdiction to taking your social work licensing exam. Your board and ASWB remain the authorities for your exact requirements.
01 — Begin locally
Your state or provincial board decides the license category, education, supervised experience, application materials, background checks, and other requirements that apply to you. Apply to the board where you intend to practice—not to a generic national checklist.
Use the ASWB license requirements finder as a starting point, then confirm the current details directly with the relevant board before you submit anything.
02 — Plan the process
Details and timing vary by jurisdiction, but most candidates move through a version of this order.
ASWB’s official overview explains this board-first process: apply to the state or provincial board, register with ASWB after approval, and then schedule with Pearson.
03 — Know the format
ASWB’s new social work licensing exams began on August 3, 2026. Current candidates test on the 2026 exams.
If you are sorting out a transition question, the testing date is what determines the applicable exam version. Confirm any individual timing question with ASWB.

4 hours
Questions use three or four response options. Review ASWB’s official resources for the current administration details.
04 — Prepare calmly
A small amount of advance planning helps you arrive ready to focus. Testing appointments are typically about 4.5 hours in total, including check-in, with four hours of exam time.
For the official check-in, rules, accommodations, and tutorial information, review ASWB’s getting ready for the exam page.
05 — Build a study rhythm
SocialBridge teaches scenario and application thinking. These are general preparation habits, not official ASWB testing instructions.
01
Start with the official content outline for your exam category so your study plan has a reliable frame.
02
Practice applied reasoning: pause to identify what the social worker needs to do, not just what fact you recognize.
03
Name the task in the question stem—such as first, next, or best—before weighing the options.
04
Review every rationale, including the questions you got right, and note the pattern behind each decision.
05
Use timed sets periodically so pacing becomes familiar without making every session a pressure test.
06
Keep a recovery plan for a difficult study week: shorten the next session, revisit one pattern, and resume the rhythm.
